Carat is defined as a unit of mass, and 1 carat = 200mg. It is an internationally accepted unit of measuring gems. Carat is used to measure the mass of pearls and gemstones. It is quite often referred to measure the purity index of a gemstone.  1 carat is roughly equivalent to 1/5 of a gram. Likewise, one- hundredth of a carat is called pointer. Since Carat is a universally accepted unit of measurement for gemstones, it makes business handling easier. Ratti, on the other hand, is also a unit of measurement for gemstones, however, it is not acclaimed worldwide. It is a centuries old Indian unit of measurement, mainly used for astrological purposes. In India, gemstones are not generally measured in grams or milligrams, but in the weight of Ratti which are egg shaped scarlet red seeds. One Ratti is roughly equal to 182 mg. Ratti is majorly used in gemstones used for astrological purposes.
